Our apartment was located in the Premier Arrondissement This didn't mean that it was posh Bell is standing at the window of our room The entrance and stairways were not encouraging We wondered what we were letting ourselves in for

Our landing was rather dreary The bathroom was grand, with lots of hot water The kitchen was small, but adequate. Annabel's mezzanine bedroom was over the top... ...with the bathroom underneath Ready for bed

There is not a lot of room I was very comfortable down below The painting at the bottom of the bed was eye catching - so was Bell Our dining area laid for our first meal The wine was good

Breakfast came from the boulangerie around the corner They also sold wonderful cakes... ...with individual names Délice Trois Chocolat and Caroline Marquise au Chocolat and Tartelette Citron

Religieuse Café and Tartelette Fraise We had cakes every night and never had the same cake twice These were bought for Alex back at home. Sadly, they didn't travel too well We also had an ice cream each afternoon from a shop nearby The flavours were wonderful. Bell's on the left was nutella and melon and mine was mango and blackcurrant

Not every local shop was worth a visit This was the local pest control shop I hope none of the occupants of the window came from our building We ate at one on the local cafés This is one of only three remaining Art Nouveau entrances to the Metro at Châtelet Sainte Opportune

Sainte Opportune - the statue which gives her name to the location One of the entrances to the Forum Des Halles just around the corner from our apartment Developed in the 1970s from the old food market of Paris, this is now regarded as an architectural disaster
and is due for redevelopment. Les Halles with the Bourse de Commerce, the Paris Stock Exchange and the church of St Eustache in the background From the outside the Forum Des Halles is interesting, but it is a hot, dark, rabbit warren inside
