entrances as in the Colosseum The northern entrance slopes down to the arena which has no substructure and was

Solfatara - the volcanic region of the Phlegraean Fields, once an essential visit for those on the The volcano is dormant, not having erupted for 4000 years A fumerole emitting steam, sulphur, sulphides and arsenides. The ground is hot to touch in places Scientific equipment monitors the earth movements in the area In the 1900 Solfatara became a spa .  This is the Stufe or natural sauna used for curing respiratory ailments

The sub-structure is well preserved and gives an indication of what that of the Colosseum would have been like Animals, scenery and gladiators would have occupied these areas The brickwork is in very good condition Extreme archaeology - these workmen were attacking Roman brickwork with a pneumatic drill! The external arcade allowed access to seating in a similar way to the Colosseum
